Vehicle sales in the Philippines rose 26.6% from a year earlier to 7,363 vehicles in May according to figures released by the Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines.

In the first five months of the year, sales rose 10% to 31,859 vehicles.

However, car sales fell 11% in May from a year earlier to 1,680 units.

The Philippines’ vehicle market is now in recovery phase, but recovery has been uneven in recent years. In 2001, the total market was 76,670 units, which compares with 145,000 units in 1997 before the effects of the Asian financial crash sent the market into freefall.
