Ford CEO Mark Fields told just-auto at the Paris Show that Ford is aiming to have just nine global platforms for almost all products by the end of 2015.
Fields said that the further contraction carries on a process in place as part of Ford’s long-term strategy to reduce cost.
“We want 99% of our sales to be off those nine global platforms by 2016,” he said. “And our longer-term goal is to get down to eight, but we haven’t put a timescale on that.
“Scale is incredibly important in this industry,” Fields said. “You have to look at global scale, regional scale, site scale and scale for your suppliers to work from.”
Ford globally had 27 product platforms as recently as 2007 and currently stands at 15.
“That gives you an idea of the progress we have made,” added Fields.
