Sales of 11,840 new vehicles in September set a record for the month since the Motor Industry Association (MIA) started collecting records in 1975.
Chief executive David Crawford said: “It reflects continued strong demand and surprisingly suggest purchases of new vehicles were unimpeded by the election during September.”
Sales of 3,458 new commercial vehicles was also a September record and the 8,382 new passenger vehicle sales was the best September result since 1986.
Year to date, registrations of new commercial vehicles were 21.5% up year on year to 27,650 and passenger vehicle sales up 10.3% to 66,789.
Passenger vehicles registrations of 8,382 units during September were up 15.3%and commercial vehicle registrations rose 23.5% to 3,458.
Toyota was the overall market leader for the month of September with 20% market share (2,321 units) with General Motors’ Holden second on 11% (1,349 units) and Ford third with 10% (1,151 units).

By GlobalDataThe Toyota Corolla was the top selling new vehicle model in September with 629 new registrations, followed by the Ford Ranger (595) and the Toyota Hilux (526).
Toyota remained passenger car market leader for the month with 19% share (1,582 units), with Holden on 12% (1,044) and Mazda third (8%; 671). Toyota was also the commercial vehicle market leader with 21%; 739 units followed by Ford (19%; 672 units) and Holden (9% 305).
The Toyota Corolla was once again the top selling passenger model with 8% market share (629) followed by the Yaris (4%; 373 units) and the Holden Commodore (3%; 277).
The Ford Ranger retained its position as the monthly top selling commercial model for September with 595 units sold (17%). The Hilux was the second best seller with 15% market share (526 units) followed by the Holden Colorado (8%; 280).
Year to date the Ranger has retained the lead as the top selling commercial model with 16% market share (4,435 units) followed by the Hilux (15%; 4,264).
Sports utility vehicles dominated with 28% of all vehicle sales in September, followed by pick-ups/chassis-cabs with 19% and small passenger cars at 16%.
“Healthy economic confidence combined with competitive pricing is fuelling strong demand for new vehicles. If sales keep at this level it could top over 124,000 new registrations for 2014, exceeding the previous best year of 123,247 new registrations in 1984,” said Crawford.
