Mitsubishi’s Nedcar plant in Born, the Netherlands, is marking its 40th anniversary a few weeks before starting production for Europe of the Outlander mid-size SUV.

The plant, located in Sittard-Geleen (Born), in the Dutch province of Limburg was officially opened on 27 June, 1968 to accommodate the growing needs of the domestic car manufacturer Daf.

The plant became a joint venture operation called NedCar – Netherlands Car in full – when the Dutch state, Mitsubishi Motors Corporation and Volvo Car Corporation joined forces in August 1991.

It built the Volvo 300-series and, later, Volvo S- and V-series cars and the Mitsubishi Carisma which shared a common platform and some engines. Then it moved on to the Mitsubishi Space Star, the Colt (still a current model) and now-defunct Smart Forfour which also shared platforms and some engines.

In February 1999, the Dutch authorities transferred their shares to the two other partners ending with a 50/50 split.
