Around 300,000 vehicles will cross the border into Mexico over the next seven weeks never to return to the US, writes Reforma/Infolatina (11/12/00) citing the Mexican Auto Industry Chamber (AMIA) leader Cesar Flores.

The Mexican Congress is set to decide over Christmas whether owners of an estimated 2 million cars and trucks smuggled into Mexico should be allowed to ‘regularise’ their vehicles.

The Senate recently passed through a bill – currently under review at both of the Chamber of Deputies committees – allowing for illegally imported vehicles to be legalised.

Mr Flores said that unless custom controls – when introducing used vehicles into Mexico – are stepped up, the local market will be flooded with ‘garbage’.
