The Mexican Regional Automotive Merchants Association is willing to bear the
expected impact of Congress’ decision to allow millions of smuggled vehicles
from the US to be ‘regularised’ – but urged the Government to cut vehicle registration
fees by 50% thus allowing the country’s used car sellers to become more competitive,
writes Reforma/Infolatina (19/12/00) citing Association President Ramon Cantu.
Quoting Mr Cantu, the article says that the Government should do away with
registration fees altogether alongside abolishing the special tax on new automobiles
(ISAN) and the National Vehicle Register (Renave) inscription fees.
The Association President continued, saying that used car sales had fallen
40% over the past month, as approval by Congress to legalise contraband vehicles
– known locally as ‘chocolates’ – moves closer.
