Maruti Suzuki India has started commercial production at Plant D at its Hansalpur facility in Gujarat, lifting the site’s annual production capacity to a million vehicles and making it the first Suzuki manufacturing location globally to reach that level.
The new plant, which began operations yesterday (30 July), adds 250,000 units of annual capacity to the Hansalpur facility.

It also keeps the Gujarat complex as India’s largest passenger vehicle manufacturing site at a single location, the group, owned by Japanese automaker Suzuki Motor, said.
Plant D will initially build the battery electric e VITARA. Across the Hansalpur site, Maruti Suzuki currently produces the Baleno, Fronx, Swift and e VITARA.
With the latest expansion, Maruti Suzuki’s total manufacturing capacity in India has risen to 2.9 million units annually, from 2.65 million units after the company opened its second plant at Kharkhoda in Haryana in May.
Its India footprint now comprises Hansalpur at a million units, Manesar at 900,000, and Gurugram and Kharkhoda at 500,000 each.
Maruti Suzuki India managing director and CEO Hisashi Takeuchi said: “Gujarat has emerged as a manufacturing and export hub for Maruti Suzuki, backed by strong infrastructure and a progressive industrial ecosystem.”
He added that the new line would support demand in India and overseas, while advancing the company’s “Make in India, Make for the World” strategy.
Maruti Suzuki said cumulative investment at Hansalpur has reached Rs252.88bn ($2.65bn), including an estimated Rs39 billion for Plant D.
The 640-acre facility, which started operations in 2017, has become a major export base and accounted for nearly 47% of the company’s overseas shipments in FY2025-26.
Takeuchi said Hansalpur and the planned Sanand facility in Gujarat would be central to Maruti Suzuki’s longer-term target of four million units of annual production in India.
Sanand, announced under an agreement with the Gujarat government in January 2024, is scheduled to start production by 2029 with an initial capacity of 250,000 units.
