New vehicles sales in Malaysia continued to soar in August, by almost 27% to 65,551 units from 51,720 units in the same month of last year, according to the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA).

This followed a 41% year-on-year sales rise in July, as buyers piled into vehicle showrooms to enjoy the tax holiday ahead of the re-introduction of the old Sales and Services Tax (SST) at the beginning of September.

The previous Goods and Service Tax (GST) was scrapped at the beginning of June by the newly elected government under prime minister Mahathir Mohamad, just three years after it was introduced by the previous government.

Passenger vehicle sales jumped 21% year on year to 55,662 units last month while commercial vehicles sales surged 71% to 9,779 units.

In the first eight months of the year, total vehicle sales were up by over 10% at 423,730 units compared with 384,726 units in the same period of last year.
