Malaysia's new vehicle market fell by almost 15% to 40,981 units in September from 48,125 units a year earlier, according to data released by the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA).
The market has declined overall in the last few months despite improving economic conditions in the country. Second quarter GDP expanded by 5.8% compared with 5.6% in the first quarter and 4.5% in the fourth quarter of 2016, helped by stronger private consumption growth.
Sales of passenger vehicles amounted to 36,517 units last month, while commercial vehicle sales accounted for the remaining 4,464 units.
In the first nine months of the year total vehicle sales increased by 1.8% to 425,711 units from 418,277 units in the same period of last year, while cumulative nine-month domestic vehicle production was down by 1.5% at 381,171 units from 386,965 units previously.
The association expects sales to improve in October, helped by more working days during the month.
