The
Proton Waja

Proton received more than 29,000 orders for its new Waja model by the end of November,
according to government officials.

Malaysia’s only domestic automaker is trying to ramp up production to 5,000
units a month to meet increasing demand.

The spokesman said that 200 local suppliers were responsible for designing
and producing parts, and that production costs have been reduced through domestic
R&D.

Domestic design and development, combined with efforts to penetrate Asian markets,
make up Proton’s strategy to improve its competitiveness ahead of greater
domestic market liberalisation, the government official said.
