LG Energy Solution Ltd (LGES) officially launched its new advanced system-on-chip (SoC)-based battery management system (BMS) with diagnostic solutions, which is designed to increase battery safety for electric vehicles (EVs).
The South Korean battery manufacturer last year stepped up its efforts to improve battery safety in response to a series of devastating fires that occurred in the country due to battery overheating. The company has now launched the BMS as a standalone business, which is also available to other battery manufacturers.

LGES has established a partnership with US semiconductor company Qualcomm Technologies Inc to accelerate the commercialization of SoC-based BMS diagnostic solutions. LGES confirmed that its new BMS software is available on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon® Digital Chassis™. It pointed out that “unlike conventional BMS, which operate on low-spec hardware, this is the industry’s first implementation of a BMS solution leveraging high-performance SoC computing power.”
The partnership between LGES and Qualcomm is focused on the development of next-generation BMS diagnostic solutions for electric vehicles. The BMS software will also integrate with the Snapdragon® Car-to-Cloud Connected Services Platform, enabling automakers to use the diagnostic solution for HMI and cloud services.
LGES said its “newly-developed safety diagnostics and degradation/lifespan prediction software, developed for the Snapdragon Digital Chassis solutions, will enable a more sophisticated and differentiated BMS solution. The core function of the BMS solution – safety diagnostics – will be significantly enhanced. By leveraging high-capacity computing power from Snapdragon Digital Chassis solutions, the system can collect more data than conventional BMS, allowing for faster and more accurate detection of anomalies such as thermal incidents.”
An LGES spokesperson said in a statement: “Through the process of technology sharing and validation, we have demonstrated the excellence of our BMS technology through synergy with Qualcomm Technologies. Now, we are officially embarking on the development for commercialization.”
