Sales of used cars in Japan were down 1% in April, compared to the same month a year ago. The figure of 356,476 units was the worst for the month in 20 years, a trade organisation said.

Japan Automobile Dealers Association data showed that used cars, excluding minivehicles with engines sizes up to 660 cc, had fallen for the third consecutive month.

Compact car sales fell 0.5% to 162,934 units, the lowest since records began in 1978 for April.

Ordinary passenger car sales fell 2% to 139,323 units.

However, secondhand truck sales were up slightly – 0.2% – the second straight month of rise.
