Toyota claimed on Friday its redesigned Prius petrol-electric hybrid to be launched in mid-May has achieved the world’s highest fuel efficiency of 38 kilometres per litre, an improvement of some 7% from the current Prius.
Toyota hopes to boost sales of the more fuel-efficient Prius on the back of tax incentives that started this month for environmentally friendly vehicles.
The incentives lower the vehicle tonnage tax by JPY150,000 to JPY200,000 for the current model. A specific tax cut for the new Prius has yet to be fixed, Kyodo News reported.
Toyota has reduced the price of the current Prius to better compete with Honda’s new Insight and plans to sell both old and new versions in Japan.
