Mazda’s domestic production, exports, and overseas production in July increased year on year.

Japanese domestic production of passenger cars rose 15.8% to 80,018 units though commercial vehicle output fell 16% to 5,740. Overall output was up 12.9% to 85,758 units.

Year to date car production was up 14.3% to 519,016, commercials rose 15.1% to 37,515 and total output was up 14.4% to 556,531 units.

For nine consecutive months since November 2005, domestic production figures have exceeded those for the same month the previous year. The July increase was mainly due to increased production volumes of the CX-7, 5, and 6.

In contrast, domestic sales of passenger cars were off 15.7% to 17,908 in July and 9.2% to 138,575 year to date. Commercials were up 4.2% to 4,543 in July and 19.5% to 33,850 year to date. Adding in sales of bought-in minicars (up 5.3% to 34,673 YTD), total YTD sales were off 4.7% to 172,425.

This was the fifth consecutive month domestic sales volumes decreased year-on-year. While sales of the 3 and commercial vehicles were steady, July’s figure reflected a decrease in domestic market demand and reduced sales of the Verisa, prior to being restyled in August, and the 2 and 6, which have been on the market for a long time. Mazda’s domestic market share of registered vehicles was 5.8% (down by 0.4 points over July 2005), with a 2.4% share (up 0.1 points) of the micro-mini segment and a 4.6% total market share, down 0.4 points year-on-year.

Exports rose 25.2% to 409,098 units YTD in July, of which 406,868 were passenger cars, reflecting increased shipments of the CX-7, 5, and 6.

On a market basis, exports to North America were particularly strong, reaching 28,715 units (up 47.1% year-on-year) due to increased exports of the CX-7 crossover.

Overseas production rose 23.1% to 193,454 units YTD – 143,106 cars (+26.5%) and 50,348 commercials (+14.2%).

Overseas production volumes have surpassed those for the same month last year for seven straight months since January 2006, with a 9.4% increase year-on-year for July 2006 due to production volume increases of products such as the Thai-built BT-50 truck series which is shipped to almost all markets except North America.

On a country basis, production in China and Thailand was steady. In China, increased production of the 6 contributed to a total of 12,280 units being produced (up 34.4% year-on-year), and in Thailand increased production of the BT-50 truck series boosted the figure to 3,647 units (up 28.5%).
