Cumulative worldwide sales of Honda hybrid vehicles passed the 1m mark at the end of September 2012, the automaker announced this week.

The milestone was reached 12 years and 11 months after the start of sales of the first generation Insight in Japan in November 1999.

Honda now sells eight hybrid models in 50 countries.

In May it began production of hybrid models in regions outside of Japan with the Acura ILX in the USA followed by Thai production of the Jazz in July this year. Jazz Hybrid output in Malaysia begins later this year.

Honda will introduce new hybrid mid-size models with a new two-motor system. A three-motor system will be introduced for the NSX and Acura RLX as well as the Legend replacement scheduled for Japan.
