Japan’s five largest domestic automakers on Thursday announced steep falls in their domestic sales, exports and global production in fiscal 2008/9 ended 31 March.


Toyota’s home market sales fell 10.7% year on year to 1,992,848 vehicles including those made by Daihatsu and Hino.


Mitsubishi Motors posted the steepest domestic sales decline of 23.1%, followed by Nissan Motor (15.1%), Mazda (14.5% and Honda (9.4%).


All five also reported double-digit export falls. Toyota posted a 21.4% dip to 2,298,543 vehicles and Mitsubishi again posted the steepest fall: 24.6%.


Toyota reported a 16.3% decline in global production of 8,093,389 vehicles, followed by Honda at 3,574,297 units (-9.6%), Nissan (2,918,532; -16.9%), Mazda (1,134,155; -14.4%) and Mitsubishi (1,076,334;  -24.8%).
