Tata-owned Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has unveiled the Jaguar XE long-wheelbase (XEL), the second Jaguar vehicle to be manufactured in China, at the Guangzhou Auto Show.

JLR says the Jaguar XEL is the second Jaguar built at manufacturing plant in Changshu and fourth JLR vehicle.

The XEL has been designed and engineered in Britain, exclusively for China, where long-wheel base premium models retain popularity (for ample rear leg room for important people being driven around).

The car joins the Jaguar XFL, Range Rover Evoque and Land Rover Discovery Sport as China made models.

As part of its RMB 10.9 billion joint venture with Chery Automobile Ltd, the Jaguar XEL will be manufactured at the Changshu factory. Developed solely for the Chinese market the Jaguar is the fourth vehicle to be built at the company’s joint venture, in less than three years.

JLR said the unveiling of the Jaguar XEL signifies the next stage of the company’s expansion plans in China. It says sales are up 20% this year.

Qing Pan, Jaguar Land Rover Executive Director said that “with an additional 100mm wheelbase length, the XEL is seamlessly integrated into the sleek design of the sports saloon, delivering even greater interior comfort.”

Also showcased at the annual Guangzhou Motorshow is the Range Rover Sport PHEV; the company’s first plug-in hybrid electric vehicle. An XF Sportbrake and 2018MY Range Rover will also be on display at the Guangzhou Motorshow.

China is JLR’s biggest market

Jaguar Land Rover has had a presence in China for over ten years and has a long-term commitment to its Chinese customers. With almost 120,000 vehicles sold in 2016, China is Jaguar Land Rover’s largest single market. It has more than 200 operational retailers and additional activities include 10 apprentice training programmes and three training academies as well as a Land Rover Experience Centre.

In the last six months the company opened its first overseas engine plant in China as part of its RMB10.9 billion joint venture, manufacturing the new Ingenium 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine for future Chery Jaguar Land Rover vehicles. It has also confirmed that the Jaguar E-PACE will be produced in China from 2018.
