An Italian newspaper has reported that Fiat plans to shut two factories under a business plan submitted to the German government.
Il Sole 24 Ore said that Fiat plans to close its plants in Termini Imerese and Pomigliano d’Arco (Alfa Romeo) and cut 6,500 jobs.
The newspaper said that according to the ‘confidential’ draft of the plan Termini Imerese will be closed in 2016 while Pomigliano in 2012.
Unions in Italy have arranged protests and there were a series of stoppages at Termini Imerese last week.
Italy’s government has said Fiat must commit to keeping all five of its car plants in Italy if it goes ahead with an Opel merger.
