Fiat Powertrain Technologies has signed an agreement with Beijing Public Transport Company for the supply of 1,000 natural gas powered engines.

This contract is part of a co-operation programme between the Italian Ministry for the Environment and Territory, the China State Agency for the Environmental Protection and the Municipality of Beijing. The initiative is based on projects to support sustainable mobility in the build-up to the 2008 Olympic Games.

This supply of natural gas powered heavy-duty engines is the largest ever made by Fiat Group and it is also claimed to be one of the most significant engine contracts in the world.

The engines, manufactured at FPT’s facility in Turin, will be fitted to locally manufactured buses which will be entering operation in the Chinese capital later in 2006.

Between 2002 and 2004, Fiat supplied the Beijing Transport Company with 320 natural gas engines, developed thanks to a research and development programme financed by the Italian Ministry for the Environment and Territory. These engines, currently used on buses in Beijing, are said to have a proven reliability record and have been a success from both an environmental and economical viewpoint.

Fiat Powertrain Technologies’ natural gas engines have a stoichiometric combustion process, based on a suitable air/fuel ratio, which uses an exhaust gas three-way catalytic post-treating system, enabling compliance with the strictest emissions legislation, such as the European Enhanced Environment-friendly Vehicle (EEV), which will come into force after 2010 for standard production diesel vehicles.
