New car sales in Italy for 2009 fell just 0.17% to 2.158m units from 2008 levels, according to figures from the country’s Transport Ministry.
Sales for December were up 16.7% from year-ago levels at 165,428 units.
The three Fiat brands took 32.7% of their home market for the year with total sales of 707,110.
The Italian Auto Club ACI calculated that 1.059m vehicles were bought in Italy in 2009 with government-backed scrappage incentives.
