Nissan’s luxury brand Infiniti said it would build five new vehicles in China in the next five years, beginning with the QX50 SUV. The announcement comes ahead of the Beijing International Motor Show.

“Over the next five years Infiniti is planning to localise five new vehicles in China, tripling our sales here in our fastest growth market, globally,” said chairman and president Roland Krueger.

“As part of our roadmap to electrify our [range], we anticipate that by 2025, more than 50% of [our] new vehicles sold globally and in China will be electrified. Together with our partner Dongfeng Motor Company, [we are] pursuing localisation in China for China, expanding our network footprint and introducing new technologies, such as our world’s first production variable compression engine (VC-Turbo), and vehicle electrification, such as e-Power. We will continue to strive to make Infiniti the top premium challenger brand in the market.”

In Beijing, Infiniti will launch its new QX50 midsize luxury crossover for the first time in Asia. Local production will begin shortly at the company’s factory in Dalian. These midsize luxury crossovers built in China will be sold exclusively there and will go on sale later this year.

The previously-shown Q Inspiration concept car will also make its Asia debut in Beijing. It gives a hint of what models with electrified powertrains might look like.

“The Q Inspiration concept car takes the traditional sedan architecture to its next stage of evolution,” said design chief Karim Habib.
