New vehicle sales in Indonesia jumped by over 37% to 85,130 units in July, compared with 61,890 units in the same month of last year, according to local reports citing data from industry association Gaikindo.
Compared with the previous month sales were up by over 28%, as the market returned to normal after the "Lebaran" annual Muslim holidays.
Nevertheless, July was a good month for the market, with economic growth still sluggish at just over 5% in the second quarter. Local demand continues to be driven by low interest rates and important new models that have entered the market over the last couple of years.
This month's motor show saw new compact MPV models enter the market, including the Mitsubishi Xpander and the WulingConfero, which are expected to attract additional buying interest and intensify competition in this all-important market segment.
In the first seven months of the year total vehicle sales increased by 4.1% to 618,630 units, from 594,020 units in the same period of last year.
