New vehicle sales in Indonesia rebounded by over 25% to 97,794 units in August, against weak volume a year earlier of 77,961 units, according to industry association Gaikindo.
August 2013 sales were held back by fewer working days due to the annual Idul Fitri holidays. This year, the holidays fell in July.
Sales in August continued to be driven mainly by cars sold under the government’s low-cost green cars (LCGC) programme, all of which were launched in the last four months of 2013.
In the first eight months of 2014 the market expanded by 4.9% to 831,510 units, from 792,361 units a year earlier.
The Toyota brand accounted for 284,263 vehicle sales in this period, up by almost 12% year on year; followed by Daihatsu with 126,165 units – helped by strong demand for the Grand Max, Xenia and Ayla models.
Honda sales jumped to 110,457 units, from 62,010 units a year earlier, thanks to strong demand for its best selling Mobilio compact MPV and the Brio Satria LCGC, launched in September and October 2013.
