Renault has moved production of its Duster SUV for the UK market from India to Romania.

The Economic Times said the move was made to reduce waiting time for the Duster in India.

Renault India country chief executive and managing director Sumit Sawhney said: “We aim to consolidate our operations in the domestic market. We first want to cater to the Indian market and then any spare capacity would be… for exports. We shifted exports of some variants to Europe for logistical and economic reasons as the currency fluctuations were not in our favour.”

Renault sells the Pulse, Scala and Duster in India. Nissan, in turn, sells the same vehicles, made in the same plants, with its own model names – Micra, Sunny and Terrano, respectively.

Sawhney said Indian customers don’t like “cross-badged” vehicles so Renault would no longer re-badge Nissan or Dacia models and would make and sell only Renault-exclusive models in India.

The Alliance partners will continue to share platforms for future products, however.
