India’s car market leader Maruti Suzuki sold 792,167 vehicles in its 2008-2009 year. This marks a growth of 3.6% over the previous 12 months, it said.


The annual sales was the highest ever by the company, outstripping the volume achieved in 2007-2008 when 764,842 units were sold.


The company’s sales included exports of 70,023 units, up by 32.1% over the prior year. The export numbers was led by the A-star, the fuel efficient compact Alto replacement launched in Europe during the year. The export tally includes around 19,000 units for Europe.


In January, the Indian car producer reported nine-month income from operations of INR144.2 trillion, a growth of 7.35% over same period last year. However, net profit after tax fell 31.9% to INR9.8bn.


In the third quarter, the company posted income from operations of INR46.3bn, a fall of 2.81%, compared to same period last year. Net profit for the quarter was INR2.13bn, down 54.27%.
