Honda has said that it will start selling the Civic Hybrid sedan in India through its local subsidiary, Honda Siel Cars India Ltd., at the end of June.

Honda is the first automaker to announce the launch of electric-gasoline hybrid cars in India, according to the company.

Kyodo News reported that the Civic Hybrid with a 1300 cc engine will be imported from Japan as a completely built unit and will sell for 2.15 million rupees.

Honda has sold more than 210,000 units of the Civic Hybrid globally since its launch in 2001. Sales of the vehicle have kept growing amid global increases in demand for fuel-efficient cars, Honda said.

The automaker will launch the Civic Hybrid in India as part of its plan to boost the global sales of hybrid vehicles.

Honda sells hybrid cars in Japan, China, the United Sates and Europe. The company plans to increase sales to 400,000 to 500,000 units by 2010 by expanding sales in emerging markets.

India is the 33rd market for the petrol-electric car, according to the Economic Times of India.

“This is yet another step to strengthen Honda’s presence in India in line with our long term goal of bringing eco friendly vehicles,” Honda’s Indian president and CEO Masahiro Takedawa was quoted as saying.
