Honda Cars India will build a manufacturing plant in Gujarat, India, its third in the country, though plans are only at an early stage.

The Economic Times said the automaker, which has plants in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh plus Tapukara, Rajasthan, plans to make India an export hub.

Honda Cars India marketing and sales chief Jnaneswar Sen said: “The third plant is part of Honda’s long-term commitment to the Indian market. We are yet to finalise the plans for the third plant and the entire process is at a very preliminary stage.”

Meanwhile the company plans to begin a second production shift at its Tapukara plant in November to meet growing demand. The factory currently makes 60,000 units a year on a single shift.

Sen said: “We have a lot of scope to enhance our production at the Tapukara plant that is spread over 450 acres and is almost [three times the size of] the 150-acre Greater Noida plant.”
