Ford India has reported a 237% sales jump in the first half of the current fiscal year which ended in September.

Compared to the same period last year, the automaker made total sales of 47,902 vehicles, more than triple the 14,209 sales recorded in April – September 2009.

The company enjoyed another strong sales month with 8,380 units sold in September, up 146% year on year, with the Figo continuing to be the top performer.

The Figo – an updated previous generation European Fiesta – has sold extremely well since launch in March and demand is expected to surge further in the upcoming festive season. With the second shift running in full steam, Ford expects to cross the 50,000 production milestone soon.

Michael Boneham, president and managing director, Ford India, said, ”We are delighted and excited about the prospect of celebrating the 50,000th Figo milestone in the next few weeks. The Figo has been a stellar performer and we begin celebrating this milestone with the ‘Discover Smart’ campaign running throughout the festive season.”

Besides the Figo, there is also strong buyer interest in the new Endeavour 4×2 automatic transmission SUV variant launched early in September.

To support the sales growth, Ford India will add five new dealerships to its network of national sales service centres and outlets over the next few weeks, boosting the total to 172 outlets in 98 cities.
