Daimler is in talks with India’s Hero Group over a similar commercial vehicle tie-up to that announced recently between Nissan and Ashok Leyland, according to reports.

According to the Associated Press (AP), local newspaper the Economic Times quoted sources in the Indian motor industry as saying the companies could start a joint venture, and set up a manufacturing facility if talks succeed. The German automaker reportedly initiated talks with the firm after discussions with Eicher Motors fell through.

According to AP, the venture would involve light commercial vehicles (up to eight tons).

AP noted that Daimler’s India chief executive Wilfried Aulbur had told reporters last September that the company was looking at manufacturing trucks by year-end and rolling out buses starting next year.

Daimler currently assembles a small number of Mercedes cars in a leased plant in India and is planning its own 5,000-unit facility in Pune to start production in 2009.
