BMW has launched new 5-series variants, boosted its sales targets and may introduce a hybrid model within the next two years.

The diesel 520d, 530d and 530d Highline joined the petrol 525i and 530i in India.

After opening an assembly plant last year, BMW sold around 1,400 vehicles but has now increased this year’s target 40% to 2800 units, 600 of which will be imported.

It is also eyeing a hybrid model for India. “In the next 18 months the hybrid will make its international debut. There is a possibility that it could find its way to India,” BMW regional chief David Panton said.

The company has a corporate social responsibility programme in the state of Tamil Nadu, home to its factory.

“We have played our part in the rehabilitation of tsunami affected people in Tamil Nadu and it’s an ongoing process, education has been a major issue and our focus is on schools for children besides the rehabilitation,” BMW India president Peter Kronschnabl said.
