The upward sales trend continued during April with most companies reporting healthy growth. Most companies benefited from a spurt of customers returning to the showrooms after expectations of an excise duty cut from the union budget. The excise duty cut has not happened and prices remained constant.

Hyundai, India’s second largest car maker, sold 13,362 units in the domestic market in April, up 136% over April 2004. The company also benefited from a surge in exports as they accounted for 6,553 units in the month, a growth of 97% compared to the previous year. During the month, the company sold 14,552 units of the Santro, 1026 units of the Getz, 3791 units of the Accent, 206 units of the Elantra, 119 units of the Sonata, 200 units of the newly launched Tucson and 21 units of the Terracan.

Meanwhile, Honda Siel, riding on the City’s popularity, posted 28% growth in sales at 3,575 units, up from the 2,793 vehicles sold in the year-ago period.

General Motors benefited from low volumes in the year ago period to post a healthy sales growth percentage. Sales were 2,214 units in April, a 58% growth year-on-year over the 1,401 cars sold in April 2004. The spurt in sales was largely due to the Tavera utility vehicle which accounted for 1,603 units.

Significantly, market leader Maruti Udyog had a comparatively weak month. Domestic sales were stagnant at 36,972 units, compared to 36,928 units in the year ago period. However, the company was hit badly by a 58% fall in exports to 1,218 units. Maruti is the manufacturing base for the European Suzuki Alto. The downward trend in sales was mostly due to a fall in sales of the ageing 800 and the Alto failing to match it with corresponding growth.
