Hyundai Motor has opened its first global Big Data Centre (BDC) in Guizhou Province, China, which it says will 'gather and analyse massive volumes of data collected from the company's connected cars'.
It also says the new facility will allow Hyundai Motor to expand significantly its R&D capabilities in
The Big Data Centre in China lays a foundation for building a China-focused Car Cloud, as Hyundai Motor plans to leverage expertise in connected car technologies gathered through experience in Hyundai Car Cloud operation in Korea, which was built in 2013.
Hyundai Motor also says it has high expectations for its self-developed Connected Car Operating System (ccOS) and Connected Car Service Platform (ccSP). Tapping into such proprietary technologies, the company 'plans to spur the establishment of connected car services tailored for Chinese customers'.
ccOS optimizes the high-speed transmission and reception of data within the vehicle, while ccSP connects drivers to IoT (Internet of Things) services. In addition to monitoring customer driving patterns, the BDC will monitor and diagnose potential problems, offering regular software updates to vehicles.
Located in China's 'national epicentre for big data' – Guizhou Province's capital Guian – the BDC shares a five-story building with China's largest internet search provider, Baidu. Guian is one of China's fastest-growing cities and is already host to global technology giants including Apple, Alibaba and IBM.

By GlobalDataThe BDC is strategically located to take advantage of access to local IT companies, such as China Unicom, to develop, analyse and process multiple data streams positioning Hyundai Motor at the forefront of the automotive dig data revolution.
"Hyundai Motor's know-how in big data analysis coupled with Guizhou Province's strong push into big data will surely accelerate development in connected car technologies as well as better enable us to cater to our customer's needs," Seung-Ho Hwang, Executive Vice President and Head of Auto Intelligence Division at Hyundai Motor Company, said. "By successfully operating our newest facility in China, we will set new standards in the big data industry and advance Hyundai Motor's IT leadership among automotive manufacturers."
The opening of the Guian facility is the first of a future global network of big data hubs that build on the foundations of Hyundai Motor's domestic BDC in Uiwang, South Korea, which started operation in 2013. On opening the Uiwang facility, the company had also begun operating a group of experts called 'Data Scientists', who are currently playing a vital role of enhancing Hyundai Motor's capabilities in big data applications.
Hyundai Motor expects the new China BDC to serve as a stepping stone for enhancing big data capabilities further, as the company plans to expand its BDC network globally in the years to come.
Collaboration with China Unicom
Alongside opening its BDC, Hyundai Motor also signed a memorandum of understanding with China Unicom, China's second-largest telecommunications provider, to co-develop a predictive analytics platform for 'various activities'.
