Hyundai Motor and Kia Motors announced jointly all future vehicles will come with built-in video recording systems, more commonly referred to as black boxes.

The drive video record system (DVRS) will first appear in the eighth generation Sonata, due to be launched at the Seoul motor show at the end of this month.

This will be the first time a DVRS will appear in a volume production car, according to the company. The system will be linked with the car’s audio/video/navigation screens and smartphones, and uses front and rear-mounted cameras.

It can record for up to three hours while driving and up to 10 hours when parked and connected to an external hard drive. The recordings can be played back, edited and erased via a smartphone application.

Separate reports suggest Hyundai Motor has developed a smartphone based digital key for its vehicles and plans to gradually make the app available in upcoming models.

The automaker said “the technology is aimed at enhancing consumer convenience in the era of the car sharing economy”, adding that it allows up to four people to open and start the car and control its functions.
