Honda Manufacturing Ghana has held a ceremony to commemorate the start of automobile “production” at its plant in Tema.

HMG is the second Honda plant in Africa following Nigeria.

Initial annual capacity is just 500 units, suggesting SKD assembly from imported kits, and actually began with the HR-V small SUV in December 2023.

Honda sees West Africa as a growth market and is operating in Nigeria, Ghana, Benin, and Cote d’Ivoire.

It established a local subsidiary in 2013 and began assembly in 2015. Ghana was started through distributors in 1997 with a local office established in 2019.

“Although production volume is still small, [we have] established a local subsidiary and begun production on our own,” Honda said in a statement.
