Things were looking dicey for Fiat in July but now with UNRAE data released for the month of August, the long-time number one brand in Italy has been defeated. And not just by the one competitor.
With only 4,756 registrations of passenger vehicles, Fiat was outsold not only by Toyota (5,941), which had been breathing down its neck in July, but by Volkswagen (5,148) and Dacia (4,941) too.
There remains some comfort for the Italian brand, as it easily keeps its number one status for the year to date, with 110,595 sales over the first eight months, second placed Toyota trailing with 82,148. Nonetheless, this is a serious situation for Fiat as it has never been in such a position before. The brand is doing extremely well in other major markets, however, sales in both Turkey and Brazil hitting numbers way higher than those for Italy.
In spite of its age, the Panda is far and away the Italian market‘s top selling model year-to-date, well ahead of the surging Sandero and Yaris Cross. There is also a cluster of other small vehicles enjoying not dissimilar success. This includes the Lancia Ypsilon, Jeep Avenger, Renault Clio and Citroën C3.
