Gotion High Tech Company, a Chinese electric vehicle (EV) battery manufacturer based in Hefei, Anhui, plans to build a battery pack assembly plant in Thailand to support rising demand for EVs in the country, according to reports in China.

Gotion is establishing a Thai joint venture called NV Gotion with its Gotion Singapore subsidiary and Nuovo Plus, the subsidiary of Thai petrochemical firm PTT.

According to reports, the joint venture would engage in the design, development, manufacture, sale and export of battery modules.

Gotion plans to have a factory operating in Thailand’s eastern economic corridor by the fourth quarter of 2023 to supply a growing number of EV production operations in the country with an eye also on exporting battery packs to other countries in the region.

Chinese automakers such as BYD, SAIC Motor and Great Wall Motors, are stepping up introduction of EVs in Thailand while European manufacturers such as Mercedes-Benz and BMW and some Japanese automakers are also getting in on the act. Last month Tesla also began selling its Chinese-made EVs in Thailand. Local analysts expect EV sales in the country to exceed 25,000 units this year, helped by sales incentives introduced last year by the government.

The Thai government has set a target for 50% of vehicle output to be battery powered by 2030. Last year the country produced an estimated 1.9m vehicles, around 55% of which were exported.
