General Motors will stop production of its subcompact Chevrolet Sonic by as early as this year, Reuters cited the Wall Street Journal as reporting.
GM is also considering discontinuing the Chevrolet Impala in the next few years while Ford will stop making the Fiesta for the US by early as next year, the WSJ also reported.
Reuters noted the move comes at a time when US consumers are increasingly shunning passenger cars in favour of more comfortable SUVs and pickup trucks.
just-auto analysis of March US sales out today showed small crossovers held four of the top 10 positions in both March and year to date sales with three spots each going to pickups and passenger cars.
Crossovers and SUVs continued to grow as a segment. At the end of the first quarter, the utes claimed 46% of the total market, an increase of 4.6 percentage points compared to last March. The market share for passenger cars shrank to less than a third, down 4.7 percentage points to 32.4% of sales.
Light trucks are now accounting for more than two thirds of total sales.
