Volkswagen says it will build an all-electric version of its Golf model by 2013.
Details are still sketchy surrounding the new vehicle, but VW is moving strongly into the electric sector by adding it will also produce an all electric version of its forthcoming Up! model which a UK magazine this week said would revive the Lupo nameplate last used on an entry-level hatchback line shared with Spanish unit Seat whose version was called Arosa.
“We will continue to offer conventional fuel in the Golf,” a VW spokesman in Germany told just-auto although he declined to reveal any further details of the electric version.
The Up! brand – that is replacing VW’s Fox model has already been shown in concept form in three and five-door versions with the latter provisionally know as the Space Up!
Up! production is due to start next year although VW is remaining tight-lipped on where manufacture will be based. “We are still some way off and [are] 18 months from launch,” said the spokesman.
“You could look at 2012 really as the year of the launch.”
