“However, this positive trend on European markets contrasts with the situation in other regions, some of which are facing major challenges”, said sales and marketing head Christian Klingler.
Global H1 sales fell 3.9% to 2.95m and 8.6% to 470,700 in June.
Central and eastern Europe H1 volume fell 20.7% to 100,900 “chiefly attributable to the downturn in Russia” where sales were off 45.7% to 36,600.
North American sales rose 3.2% to 291,500 due to double digit growth in Canada and Mexico but US sales fell 2.6% to 179,100.
In South America, where, VW said, “the situation remains tense”, VW volume fell 21.9% to 247,900 with Brazil sales down 27.7% to 184,900.
For the first time in several years the overall Chinese market took a downturn in June.
“The market in China is changing. As the market leader we could not escape the effects of these overall developments. Qualitative growth nevertheless remains one of our key goals,” Klingler said. Sales fell 6.7% to 1.30m driving Asia-Pacific region sales down 6.1% to 1.41m.
