BMW has announced that it will start building a third model at its Leipzig plant.

Alongside the three-door 1-series and the 3-series sedan, the 1-series coupe will be built exclusively in Leipzig for global markets.

Leipzig plant manager Peter Claussen made the announcement of the third model at a celebration to mark production of the 250,000th vehicle at the plant since opening in March 2005.

All three models will be produced on the same production lines – from the body shop, through the paint shop to the assembly line. Body parts and other components for the three models will be produced in separate areas.

The plant produces between 650 and 700 cars per day and uses a flexible working time and shift system. A total of 5,200 people work at the plant, with 2,500 of those employed by BMW and the remainder by suppliers and BMW partner companies.
