The Smart Fortwo should soon be available with stop-start technology.
DaimlerChrysler announced in Stuttgart today (19 June) that the just-redesigned model would be available with the system by the end of this year.
According to the German press agency, the technology would be available first with petrol engines.
The most frugal petrol-powered Smart currently emits an average of 112g of CO2 per kilometre. The most frugal diesel emits just 88g.
Engineers are also reportedly working on a hybrid system for the two-seater, but no timeframe has been given for when such technology might be available on the market.
PSA’s Citroen was an early pioneer of stop-start technology and it was recently added to some BMW models. It is also expected in BMW’s Mini model line soon – the brand shares PSA engines.
