General Motors has reached a deal with its German car workers for increased flexibility in work schedules in return for a no-layoff pledge to the end of 2010, the head of the company’s German subsidiary told the Associated Press (AP) on Friday.

Work time would vary from 30 to 40 hours a week, but would average 35 hours, Hans Demant, chairman of Adam Opel AG, reportedly said.
No one can be fired from Opel until 2010 and none of the company’s plants in Europe will be closed, the AP report said.
Opel’s research and development centre in Ruesselsheim would be preserved and serve as GM’s main European centre for research, cooperating with the main centre in Detroit, the report added.
