Having refused to rule in or rule out production of a Galaxy replacement only weeks ago, Ford of Europe has today stated that “an all new Galaxy seven passenger vehicle will go on sale in mid-2015”.
The announcement was contained within the text of a press release issued by Cologne-based FoE earlier on 9 January. When asked by just-auto, a Ford spokesman would not say when the vehicle will be revealed. The Geneva show in early March seems likely for the public debut.
In other news announced today, the next generation Edge for European markets will be manufactured in Canada. While this would seem logical, Ford has not named a build location for European-spec vehicles until now. While Oakville (Ontario) will begin manufacturing the new-shape model in the second quarter, cars for the European region will not enter production until Q4. Unlike the model for North America, China and Russia, four- and six-cylinder petrol engines will not be offered in Europe. Instead, it will have a 2.0-litre Duratorq TDCi diesel with the choice of two power outputs.
Despite its size, FoE’s Edge will have just five seats. Rivals such as the Hyundai Santa Fe and Land Rover Discovery Sport have seven and 5+2 seats respectively.
As the first generation Edge has been made at Ford-Sollers’ Elabuga joint venture plant in the Russian republic of Tatarstan since the first quarter of 2014, the replacement model should eventually be built there too. China’s Changan-Ford JV will also manufacture the new model.
