The German government on Thursday named senior Daimler executive Ruediger Grube to head national rail company Deutsche Bahn.

Grube is head of corporate development at Daimler and responsible for its strategy, acquisitions and operations in northeast Asia. Since 2007 he has also been chairman of EADS , an aerospace group he helped forge as a behind-the scenes operator, Reuters reported.

Grube also headed the team that reviewed bids for Chrysler when the then DaimlerChrysler sold off most of its US unit in 2007. He had earlier helped organise the 1998 merger between Chrysler and Daimler-Benz as former Daimler CEO Juergen Schrempp’s right hand man.

Grube will replace Hartmut Mehdorn who said on Monday he would step down after 10 years following revelations the firm spied on most of its 220,000 employees as part of an anti-corruption campaign, the news agency said.
