Continental AG reports that sales in its passenger tyre business (excluding NAFTA) rose 6% in 2001 to 62.4 million units from 59.1 million tyres in 2000.

Within that total, European OE business was up 12% with sales in 2001 up to approximately 20.9 million tyres.

Following turnover of 1.86 billion euros in 2000, the car tyre business grew by 11 percent to 2.07 billion euros in 2001. The company said that the strong rise is due to ‘focusing on tyres in the premium segment of high-performance tyres and a stabilisation in tyre prices’.

In the winter tyre business, mild weather together with high levels of dealer stocks from the previous season led to a fall in Continentals sales by about 6 percent to 11.9 million units.

But the company said that it was nevertheless able further to expand its market share in Europe in the segment by 0.3 percent.
