BMW increased sales 16.4% from 80,740 in May 2001 to to 93,982 cars last month. For the five months to the end of May, deliveries increased by 18.7% to 449,286 units (YTD 2001: 378,547).


BMW branded vehicle deliveries for the first five months increased 5.4% to 399,117 units (2001: 378,521). Mini deliveries accounted for another 50,000 taking deliveries since sales began – in the UK – less than a year ago to over 75,000.


In Western Europe, BMW sales to the end of May increased 18.4% to 278,508 units (2001: 235,299 units). The UK led with an increase, including Mini, of 55.0% to 54,532 cars delivered, followed by France (up 29.2% to 18,475 units), Italy (up 25.6%/26,924 units) and Spain (up 25.0%/15,063 units). In Germany, the number of cars delivered increased 6.2% to 115,241 units during the first five months.


North America also saw new sales highs: In the USA, the May increase was 16.8% to 23,624 vehicles, with BMW accounting for 21,828 and the newly-launched Mini the rest.


To the end of May, BMW Group sold 102,010 cars while Canadian sales increased 26.2% to 6,503 units.

Asian market sales increased 39.0% to 6,598 units in May with year-to-date sales up 19.1% to 28,688.


Sales in China during the first five months increased 40.3% to 3,261, Taiwan was up 22.2% to 2,526, the Philippines up 149.7% to 357 and South Korea up 60.3% to 1,702.


Worldwide BMW motorcycle sales were up 7.7% to 48,053 to the end of May compared with 44,588 a year ago.
