GAZ Group says it has started production of chassis frames for the new model of Mitsubishi Pajero Sport. A unit of GAZ specialising in component production and is able to supply other OEMs in Russia looking to raise local content levels, in line with government decrees.

The project is implemented under a contract signed by PJSC GAZ and PCMA Rus LLC on welding of frames for Mitsubishi Pajero Sport by PJSC GAZ, application of corrosion-protective coating (phosphating and e-coating) and delivery to assembly line of PCMA Rus in Kaluga. There are two frame types: for vehicles with automatic and manual gearbox.

Frames are manufactured at the site established in 2013 for production of frames for the previous generation of Mitsubishi Pajero Sport. GAZ has set up a welding area (purchased semi-automatic welding machines and air treatment plants, installed equipment for frame transportation along the welding line), commissioned a phosphating line, and modernised the existing e-coating line. The check equipment is submitted by Mitsubishi Motors corporation.

Within the framework of preproduction of frames for the new Mitsubishi car in 2017, GAZ installed new welding equipment delivered by Mitsubishi Motors Corporation, carried out training for in-house specialists in the field of specifics of production of carrying structures for the new model.

GAZ Group actively participates in export replacement and development of component production. GAZ Nizhny Novgorod site is the base of the specialised cluster of components production for the Russian and foreign OEMs. Quite a range of automotive component productions are operating within the territory of the company: Matador – IP frames, Lear – seat frames, Sotex – seats, Yapp – fuel tanks, etc. GAZ is also developing in-house and joint production for localising the modern component base.

In 2012, GAZ launched production of exhaust gas treatment systems together with the European company Bosal, in 2014 set up a joint-venture for production of fastening elements together with the Swedish company Bulten and started production of front axles for VW and Skoda cars, in 2015 GAZ set up production of stamped body parts for Mercedes-Benz Sprinter. In 2016, GAZ was nominated as a supplier of components for Ford Sollers engine plant, started supplying YAMZ-530 engine components, Bulten Rus was nominated as a supplier for industrial projects of Renault-Nissan and Avtovaz alliance. In 2017, GAZ was nominated as a supplier of components for brakes manufacturer Wabco. YAMZ engine plant of GAZ Group manufactures engines for Mercedes-Benz Sprinter in Yaroslavl.

The Mitsubishi Pajero is a sport utility vehicle manufactured by Mitsubishi Motors since 1973, and is named after Leopardus pajeros, the Pampas cat which is native to the Patagonia plateau region of southern Argentina – but also recognised as the Montero and Shogun.
