Reports in France suggest that PSA is to cut output of its 208 model at its Poissy plant in France. The move is being seen as part of the company’s plan to reduce its overcapacity in Europe.

French daily newspaper Les Echos said that the change would mean that the pace could be picked up on production of DS3, the DS3 convertible and C3, which share the same production line at Poissy.

The Bloomberg news agency noted that PSA said in December that it was launching an internal study to decide whether to close assembly lines in Poissy or at its Mulhouse plant in eastern France.

Les Echos suggested that PSA wants Poissy to specialise in upmarket urban segment models such as the DS3 and 208 GTI as well as a new model for the segment in 2015.

The current Peugeot 208 has performed well in the West European car market, but the market remains highly depressed. The French car market declined by almost 6% to under 1.8m units in 2013.

PSA has already closed its plant in Aulnay near Paris as it grapples with overcapacity in Europe.
