Toyota Motor Manufacturing France (TMMF) today officially started engine assembly in Valenciennes-Onnaing.
The engine plant will assemble 180,000 engines annually by 2003 – 150,000 petrol units and 30,000 diesels.
The new facility – located alongside Toyota#;s Yaris production plant – cost 22 million euros and will employ 140 people by 2003.
The new 6,100m² engine facility started with assembly of one litre petrol engines. By autumn 2002 it will start building 1.3 litre petrol units and, at the beginning of 2003, it will begin assembly of 1.4 litre diesels.
Engine production staff will be split into two teams.
Plans for the plant#;s construction were announced in January 2001. Construction began last July and was completed in March.
