Although October’s registrations were down by 2.2% to 184,765, the total French market for the year to the end of October is fractionally up on last year – 1,806,085 sales compared with 1,778,357, an increase of just 1.6%. DaimlerChrysler was the big winner in October with sales up 33%, thanks no doubt to such in-demand new models as the Mercedes-Benz C-class and Chrysler’s wacky PT Cruiser mini-MPV.

Other manufacturers mostly saw slight registration downturns compared with October 1999. Rover was the biggest loser with sales down 61.5% – from 2065 in October 1999 to just 794 a year later. This will surely worry the company’s new British owners because France has historically been a strong market for the Rover brand, especially the diesel models.

For the year to the end of October, Citroen has made the strongest gains, boosting registrations by 12.5% to 221,861 cars. DaimlerChrysler is up 10% but Peugeot managed just 1.7%.

As usual in France, locally-produced cars dominate the sales charts with a share of almost 61% of registrations for the year to date. Registrations of foreign brands are down 3.4% overall with the Japanese slice of that cake virtually unchanged at just 0.1% up on 1999.
